"Getting to Know" Waimanalo Stream

On Sunday December 5, 2004, KBAC joined with the Waimanalo Canoe Club to learn more about Waimanalo Stream and help resotore some of the streambank. Lisa Ferrentino's was our expert. Lisa has been actively restoring the stream for several years. On this sunny day, community memebrs planted ilie'e alonside the streambank.

While planting, we learned different techiniques for erosion control, such as coconut fiber rolls at the base of the bank slope. These rolls are biodegradable and help control bank erosion, allowing time for the plants to establish and stabilize the streambank.

After a few hours of weeding and planting, we took the visual awareness survey for Waimanalo Stream. To see the results, click here.

Oral History
Long time residents in Waimanalo tell of a valley in the 1920's where no trees could be seen. It was sugar, sugar, sugar, as far as the eye could see. The sugar plantations rerouted and channelized the streams for irrigation purposes.

When Lisa first started working on restoring Waimanalo Stream, california grass covered most of the streambed and the bank on the right hand side of the stream was bare.
