"Getting to Know" Maunawili Stream

Where is Maunawili Stream? (opens in a new window)

On Sunday August 4th 2002 Kailua Bay Advisory Council sponsored Maunawili Community Stream Walk. Ric Guinther is an active community volunteer dedicated to improving water quality, discussed the findings of his water quality samples in the stream and at Kawai Nui Marsh. This study is funded by KBAC and the results are available from KBAC's ‘Ahahui Mālama i ka Lōkahi web page.

Ric is studying the water quality that enters the marsh and the quality that leaves the marsh, comparing the results, and also the seasonal fluctuation patterns of the mud under the vegetation. The walk started at the back end of the Maunawili Valley Neighborhood before we car pooled to Kawai Nui Marsh were we witness restoration efforts to remove vegetation covering the marsh in order to create open water for wetland plants and animals.
