"Getting to Know" Kea‘ahala Stream

Where is Kea‘ahala Stream? (opens in a new window)

On Saturday February 22, 2003 approximately 25 community members participated in the KBAC Kea'ahala Stream Walk, lead by Dr. Dave Krupp of Windward Community College (WCC). We carpooled to six different locations starting at WCC and working our way down to the stream mouth. As we made our way makai, we looked at the conditions of the stream that effect water quality. We also stopped and looked at parking lot runoff, manicured district park lawns, the Kāne'ohe industrial area, and a good example of vegetated stream banks absorbing the nearby urban runoff.

At the Windward Mall upper parking lot - approximately midway along the length of the stream- we teamed up to fill out the KBAC Awareness Survey. At this location, the stream changes from a natural to a concrete channel. The scores on the Awareness Survey reflected the type of channel each team surveyed. The teams scoring the concrete channelized portion of the stream placed the stream in "Fair Condition", with scores ranging between 11-16. However, the stream was rated "Good Condition" by the two teams rating the natural channel portion of the stream.

Although the "Stream Awareness Survey Data Locator" is still being worked on, you are welcome to view the data for these sites:
