The Center for Conservation Research and Training,
University of Hawai‘i, has been contracted to take actions on
several of the measures identified in the "Draft Waimānalo
Stream Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Implementation Plan" (prepared
by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency and Hawai‘i Department
of Health, June 2001).
As part of the program, HHC also conducts field trips with the students
where they participate in such activities as water testing and beach
clean ups. Teaching future generations the value of clean water is
the key to improving and sustaining it. HHC has a full schedule of
classes planned for the coming school year. |
Contract activities
include:
- Nutrient Management Planning for Waimānalo farms to
reduce fertilizer use.
- Roadside Revegetation and Erosion Prevention Study at Waimānalo Agricultural Park to reduce sediment entering stream channels
by planting drought tolerant, low maintenance vegetation.
- Educational Workshop on Animal Waste Management to improve
the storage and handling of animal manure.
- Prototype stream crossing for equestrian and mountain bike
trail to reduce erosion on Waimānalo trails.
- Quarterly Cleanups and Streambank Planting Events to reduce
litter in and near streams and improving streambanks.
- Conduct the Mālama Waimānalo Keiki Water Festival youth
water quality education program.
- Provide both the residential and farm communities with water
quality education materials on pollution prevention and streambank
stabilization methods.
